Brandon {Senior Session}

For those of you who have us book marked- this will be our last post on this blog. We are moving to a great new format! This means bigger preview images for our clients, better ways to give feedback and a very shiny new blog! Stay tuned for the switch!

It was so nice to see Brandon and his family again! A year and a half ago or so (feels like forever) I photographed his sisters wedding. They were back in town visiting from Kansas, and we got together for some fun senior portraits since Brandon will be graduating with the class of 2010!

These guys came prepared. Brandon brought his motorcycle, his favorite outfits, his favorite niece, and lots of help! We had a great time!

This picture cracks me up. Seconds later Brandon and I both burst out laughing. I guess serious shots are out for this guy!

We managed to get a couple group shots in as well. The whole family was too fun. I told ya he brought lots of help!

Its so sweet how much Brandon's niece adores him. She is definitely his girl! So sweet!

Britani + Adis Wedding Preview

As you may recall from their engagement session...these guys do a lot of kissing. If you are scared of expressions of love etc etc etc, run away now! If not, try to keep up as we take a quick peek into the big day of one of the sweetest couples I know.

I have to say, these two are amazing. I feel like I have known them forever. They have been together since highschool and are so incredibly devoted to one another- its just incredible to be around them.

Britani and Adis were married last week at a sweet little waterfront Scottsdale restaurant surrounded by close friends and family. I was lucky enough to be there to capture every moment. It was beautiful!

I can not believe how Adis makes Britani laugh...its incredible. Here, he had been admonished by the judge for jumping the gun on his vows. I don't think I have ever seen a groom this enthusiastic about marrying the love of his life.
You know, if you look around you, you can find all sorts of interesting things. This wall for example...is Chipotle. Aside from tasty burritos, they usually have some kind of cool texture somewhere that I can borrow. There just happened to be a Chipotle in the same parking lot as the resturuant.... awesome!

Britani and Adis had such a unique cake! Folds of fondant covered it and gave the appearance that the cake was draped in striped satin! Absolutely gorgeous.

The downside with a very personal wedding at a smaller venue is the limitations of settings for portraits. This is easily solved by doing seperate bridals. Additionally this means guest aren't stuck waiting for a long time for the bride and groom after the ceremony to get their portraits done. We spent a lovely Sunday afternoon at the garden, enjoying the warm light and last few days of the glass exhibit. I admit, I am going to cry when it leaves next week.

Despite the garden being very crowded, we found plenty of great areas to escape the crowds.

Britani's something blue. If I were not addicted to shoe photos, I might have missed it. Such a creative touch!

Britani and Adis's bridals were also the inagural shoot for the new 5D Mark II (affectionately named Jimmy). I have to say it is so nice! Photogs, if you are on the fence on getting one...get off it and go get it already!

On a personal note, I love weddings where I start with clients and end with new friends. I am so fortunate to be able to do something I love that lets me meet all sorts of wonderful people. I am greatful every day for the opportunity.

Their slideshow is absolutely worth watching. There were soooo many images I could not put into the post itself that made it into the slide show.

Last night I went to go visit with Kirk's cousin Jennifer and her daughter Jocie and son Harrison (they are awesome and hilarious and if you give Jocie a cupcake she gets frosting everywhere- including her eye lashes!). Dragged along a camera and a light because well...last time I photographed her son Harrison, he was tiny and in a bucket and why not?

Fathers day is coming up. Dads like pictures just as much as moms do!

Sadly my bulb in my soft box finally bit the dust like 10 shots in (and working with a kid under one and a three year old means only so many of those shots were viable) but before it did, I managed to catch this gem:

Harrison would giggle and be smiley right until the camera was up to my face...and then do this. What a face! I absolutely love it. The boy can pout!

He's usually such a happy little guy so the sourpuss face was definately far from the norm for him. I promise I was not pinching him (regardless of what his sister tells you...shes three remember?) or otherwise annoying the baby. Its just tough to be a little guy having a photo taken. All the same, I love visiting with these guys- they are so much fun!

On a completely different note- I admit I have been holding out on you guys. I have a beautiful wedding to show you from last weekend...but we are holding off until we do their off site shoot on Sunday. I swear, its like keeping a juicy secret and its killing me.

In other news Kirk is leaving tomorrow for the Indianapolis 500 with the men in his family and will be gone until Tuesday. They go every year and something awesome always happens. Last year it was a private tour of AG racing with one of their head engineers. This year? Who knows.

Hopefully he will have LOTS of great photos to share when he gets back, and maybe I can coerce him into guest blogging (because you know you want to see fast cars and photos of whatever cool stuff happens in the midwest). Hes taking a point and shoot since the stands are so packed and I won't let him take the 5D or the 5D Mark II, but previous years have not dissapointed.

While Kirk is gone I am going to shoot, edit, work on the website and be otherwise productive...(having the girls over for chocolate cupcakes and chick flicks is productive right?) so it should be a very positive and enjoyable holiday weekend. I can't wait!

I have been waiting and hmming and hawwwing since well...before I bought the original 5D ages ago. Kirk made me do it- I swear (he always makes me do the things that my fathers voice in my head tells me not to do...the man could make a nickle scream). The 5D Mark II is officially joining our happy little family. I am going to have to tip the UPS guy reeaaallly well during the holidays this year.

For you non photographers...I think even you can appreciate this beauty (or I am delusional- both work for me!). The stats on the new hotness can be found here: DP Review

What does this mean for my clients? Ginormous images (ever wanted a bigger than life poster of yourself?), AMAZING colors, beautiful low light shots, and more amazing images. Oh. And it does video. Its just nifty like that. I think we shall name it Jimmy.

Vanessa + Erik Wedding Previews

Its been an insane week here for us! I thought I was never going to get these posted! One computer nightmare after another left me pretty much editing software-less...and then it would not save all of my hard work! Lucky for me, Kirk is a genius. And a nerd. A nerd genius. Good lord I love that man! He fixes everything.

Over the weekend, Vanessa and Erik were sealed in the Mesa Temple. I am absolutely delighted for them! While their initial plans to get hitched back in February did not work out as planned it was a beautiful day at the temple. We could not have asked to work with nicer weather or people! As you can see, their family and friends were really fun!

We had a little fun with the wedding party. The next shot in this series, most people's underpants are showing...oops.

Vanessa chose an AMAZING dress. Even Kirk commented on it (that never happens...hes so blasé about weddings usually)! A lot of their images called for wide angles and vintage styling because of the classic dress and amazing french blue details they chose. Just gorgeous!

Lots of fun, grungy textures for these shots just fit right in! I love when that happens!

We did un-shoe shots for these two. Vanessa found really awesome shoes to wear, but they hurt her feet. Who says shoes need feet?

And whats better than a beautiful day at the temple, with a beautiful couple and a beautiful dress? An intimate back yard reception! It was such a nice evening for family and friends to gather and celebrate out doors! They had the whole yard beautifully set up!

Gotta love wedding duckies!!!

Some of their friends had a very impressive gave of hands free catch going on with their custom m&m's...it was too funny! It was really fun to watch their family and friends really enjoy themselves. Just about everyone kicked off their heels and danced the night away.

And they lived happily ever after....

San Diego, Kansas City and Catch-Up...

Its been a while since I posted to the blog! Its hard some days when everything and anything demands your attention. Since I have a few moments (or hours) until my editing software decides its going to work (my computer has gremlins that Kirk has not chased away lately...mysterious missing emails, little photoshop horrors, etc) I have a few moments to chat!

So, here's a quick catch up of what you might have missed!

As you might recall, at the end of March we took a little family vacation and dragged my mom out to San Diego (because we love her and she is awesome). My sister joined us as well because well, shes not one to turn down a free trip and she had not seen us since she moved to Los Angeles to get famous and stuff in January. I still owed you photos...so here they finally are!

We did the zoo, the beach, Scripps Aquarium, Sea World and balboa park. Sang loudly and off key in the back of the car. Drank waaay too much starbucks. Ate at Point Loma Seafood (yummmmm!). Stayed up late. Jumped on the bed. Petted dolphins. Named baby seals. Took insanely embarrassing self portraits. You know...all the fun stuff.

Here is a quick highlight reel without camera shy Kirk and mom pictured (since they might kill me).

I am hoping to hit LA for another round of sister time in July for my birthday (Disneyland heck yeah! Were going to go on Space Mountain a hundred times!). Sarah is also coming home over Memorial Day while Kirk is in Indy! I can't wait! I miss her like crazy!

I also spent some more time in April Kansas City photographing k9 closet super models and products and the like. Its beautiful out there right now. Everything is blooming and as the temperature climbs I wish I could teleport myself there more and more. I really like visiting Heidi and Blake. Mirabella went with me for this trip and she agrees, its nice when the fountains are on and flowers are blooming. She also thinks that having to be in a crate for any length of time is not nice in case you were wondering.

Aside from that its been busy busy busy! Photo work, volunteer work, work work, discs going out right and left. I have some super awesome sessions coming up that I am so excited for. Trying to spend time out doors while the weather is nice. Spending stupid amounts of time/money with the vet because problems come in threes. Working on our house (spring cleaning is not my idea of fun), and the yard, and an endless slew of stuff to get done.

Hope all is well with everyone else as well! I have some great wedding images from this weekend coming up as soon as my software decides to cooperate. Lets all keep our fingers crossed!

A Walk in the Rain with the Waits

The weather was foreboding. A self proclaimed worry wart, two days ahead I was eyeing the forecast by the hour. When Malia had originally contacted me to book her session, I had no availability for a month- and now it was going to rain on the day I had been able to get her family session in.

Luckily, she and her sweet little family don't mind a little mud.

Mud, rain, and all the lovely things that come with it pose a little disruption to my usual lighting and shooting methods. Somehow it made this session all the more special. Rather than the usual posed approach to family portraits, we settled on a photojournalistic walk in the rain.

Malia invited me to photograph her family in their own neighborhood. The very same one she grew up in. Her sister lives next door, parents down the road, and they know just about everyone in the area. Their world is tucked away just off a major road in suburbia- but you would miss it if you weren't looking. Dozens of little ranches in the middle of miles of tract homes and shopping centers- beautifully quiet and populated with chickens. A little secret slice of rural life.

The little man of the family, Preston, turned three on Monday (Happy Birthday little guy!). As such there was the prerequisite shyness at the beginning of the session- but it turned into smiles, huge grins and giggles later! He's quite cute when he pouts too.

Their neighbors llama Dolly (Dolly Llama- get it? hehe) got in on the action too!

I get the idea Preston really likes horses. He was way into the neighbors beautiful Clydesdales. I thought he was going to go right through the fence for a moment.

Aren't they sweet? It was a different and challenging session (rain and all..since when does it rain in AZ?!?)- but I had a blast playing in puddles with the Waits!

With that said- I am out of town again on location for a shoot until next Tuesday! Please be patient with emails/phone calls! I have limited access and will try my best to get back to you! Have an AWESOME week!

We really do learn a little more about ourselves every time we visit the ocean cliffs of La Jolla. That place is still my favorite place in the whole wide world. See my cheesy and a little too honest writings from a couple of years ago regarding this place here.

It really is super beautiful there.

I am home. Glad to be so and a little sad. We were greeted with great fanfare from excited puppies and friends watching them. Only slight injuries occurred while we were gone, and since they hounds had a playmate for the weekend I doubt they missed us too much.

Photos as soon as I can upload and go through them- there are about a billion of them (it was a long, exciting trip). Some of them are insanely cute, since it was seal pupping season.

It was a wonderful weekend with my sister (who I miss terribly already), mom, and of course Kirk. Hooray for family trips. We saw baby seals/giraffes/gorillas, petted dolphins, fed slimy fish to sea lions, watched nature be nature and enjoyed sunsets. We breathed ocean air and enjoyed waves crashing into cliffs. We explored tide pools with the same gusto of the small children the next tide pool over. It was fantastic and I admit I am finding it tough to wake up in the real world again.

In other news, I will again be gone next weekend (an "emergency trip" to Kansas City, before my third trip there in two weeks for the big show. Gosh I love it there!) so you may just be missing me again. In the mean time, LOTS of editing to do for all of you, and lots of new images to create. Its gonna be a busy week!

Adis and Britani- Engagement Previews

I knew from the moment I began talking to Britani about their wedding I would be working with her and Adis...we immediately clicked. These two are so incredibly sweet, fun and funny...there is no way for us to just not instantly like them! Our chat over ice cream in down town Tempe could have gone on forever and I don't think any of us would have batted an eye.

If you don't like kissing photos this isn't your post. These two are just so darned beautiful when they kiss, I just had to share a whole slew of the mushy gushy stuff. If you don't like photos of kissing you might want to consider which blog you are reading anyway :P. I can send you a link to wired, or the wall street journal or something if you don't love real people in real love.

Britani and Adis are getting hitched just three days after Kirk and my third anniversary so I can already tell its going to be a gorgeous day! I am really looking forward to it- these two are so fun and willing to play!

We had a lovely sunset shoot on a beautiful Sunday afternoon with a good bit of wind! It was a really nice afternoon to spend outside!

Vintage style color post processing just seems to fit these two, so you will be seeing a lot of it if you have not already noticed. So much fun!

I found a pretty little bird and flower texture and couldnt help myself. It is spring afterall!

I get the idea that Adis loves to make Britani laugh. Shes beautiful and especially when she laughs- she just lights up!

Her ring is beautiful!

The perfect end to a beautiful day, don't ya think? I sure am lucky to do what I do. It was a romantic, silly, fun and really enjoyable shoot- I can't wait to do it all again on their wedding day!

Watch the video, or you'll be sorry! (Do my threats actually work on any of you? Didn't think so...) It should be noted that I love this song...it makes me smile. Sadly I actually had to take images out to make it all fit. I hate when I have to do that!

PS. I am out of the office until Monday enjoying some much needed family time! We are taking my mom and my sister (who we have not seen in a few months since she moved to LA to become the amazing music artist she is) to San Diego to enjoy our favorite places. Photos when I get back, and I will try to answer emails and calls while I am gone, but I will have limited access (since Kirk has already banned me from editing or emailing...I am sneaky though!)! Sorry for any inconvenience.

Creative Rejuvenation with The Hunsaker Family

Every now and then I leave a session feeling completely and totally creatively rejuvenated. Most often this happens in a perfect storm...a client lets me play and experiment (often willing to try anything silly), its a beautiful location, we all click, we have a lot of fun. I go back to the office and just can't stop editing...singing the whole time (bring earplugs if you come for a visit...you will definitely know when I am feeling this way- the neighbors sure do!).

Since this was one of those sessions, its going to be a long post. Grab a snack, and the comfy chair, maybe your favorite spirit lifting music and hang on. As always click images to see bigger and don't forget to check out the slide show at the end. Its precious.

The cutie with the electric blue eyes? Yeah, that's Mr. Drake. Last time I saw him was at the Calkins wedding, when he was not much more than a big baby bump on poor Lonna. I will spare a rehash of her favorite photo demonstrating said point in Drakie's life but suffice to say she looks adorably uncomfortable in it.

Hes cute enough to knock you out, even without the baseball bat.

Of course, we know why Mr. Drake is cute. Just look at Mom and Dad. Lonna and Shane were high school sweethearts and believe me it still shows.
Just now there is another sweetheart in the middle!

What to do when the water is just a teensy bit chilly? Stand on mom of course! No secret I love shoe shots. When there are no shoes to be shot? Well...yeah.

I stole the baby for this one. Had to. The cuteness was killing me. Oh, and the baby was being pretty cute too!

Can't possibly guess that this kid is gonna like baseball when he gets bigger huh? The ball kept rolling away and Drake kept reaching. Finally someone gave him a hand.

I *almost* wasn't gonna do this one. Figured it would not look right with a little one. I have been wrong before but I could have been really wrong on this one. I am glad we decided to go for it. I love it!

Ah- possibly the most fun family pose ever. Drake gets his face making from his parents. Can ya tell?

We know who rules in this little family. Heck with a face like that this kid could rule the world. I had such an amazing time playing with the Hunsaker Family that I completely forgot that I was working.

Its days like this that I absolutely LOVE my job!

Making Faces with Parker

Little Parker is two months old. In two months- hes accomplished quite a lot. He is incredibly adorable, has mom and dad wrapped around his finger, and makes hilarious faces. He has favorites. He has a doggie friend. He is a broncos fan. He has awesome hair that the stars of High School Musical would envy. See? Told you he accomplished a lot so far.

Two month olds are fun. They make goofy faces and have really fun photo sessions and yet they are not quite big enough to roll over and run away just yet (muahahahaha!). The perfect age to catch a little personality! In Parker's case, its a pretty big personality.

Little ones are awesome (Parker included). They have cute wrinkly butts.

They have a distinct lack of belly button lint (and really cute belly buttons!).

They nap in cute positions.

What did I tell ya about the cute goofy faces?

Teensy tiny hands/feet/ears and stuff.

Did I mention the goofy faces?

And they just look so cute while they dream up other stuff to accomplish.

I wish they would stay this little forever, but that's why photography was invented. Keeps them tiny and sweet. I had a great time making faces with little Parker. I can't wait to see what else he accomplishes as he grows!

Kate's Senior Portraits- Preview

What's cooler than one Kate? Two Kate's of course. This is Kate (too!):

I did her brother's senior pictures a couple of years ago (at the same park no less) and now its her turn. Kinda exciting right?

Kate is headed up to NAU next year. She got some practice wearing a sweater during her session...shes going to need a few. Its chilly up there!

Oh no!!! Look out for the winged robots!!!! In seriousness, these are new to the park and I don't know how they got there but I love love love them! So fun! (And ridiculously nerdy)

This family is sooo fun! Whenever we get together for senior photos, we can't help but snap a few family shots too! This one is so very dorm worthy (and living room worthy too!)

Spring is definitely in swing and the flowers were out in full force. Lucky us!
Said older brother who graduated two years ago came back on spring break to support his sister in her photographic endeavor. Very sweet.

Congratulations Kate! We are incredibly excited for you and wish you all the luck in the world at NAU!

Spring in the Garden

Thank you to everyone who was able to join us for our Stroll and Shoot- we had a great time! Hopefully everyone got some great images too!

It was a gorgeous morning for a stroll, and the wildflowers were in full swing!

The colors were fantastic. Spring flowers combined with the glass and the butterflies to make for the perfect day!

Thanks for joining us! If you couldn't make this one, we missed you! It was so much fun though, I am sure we will do something similar again soon!

Our Kansas City Trip Was AWESOME!!!

The sight of Phoenix from the air at night has always been (in my mind at least) one of the most beautiful sights in the world. A glimmering galaxy of lights and life teeming below.

Peering out my window in the half empty plane, watching the ground beneath me I am reminded of all of my favorite parts of Phoenix as I see them pass by. The lights on the Mill Avenue bridges, the mountain Kirk proposed on (he knew I loved the city lights), the flickering rivers of headlights, the tall buildings downtown all make me think of home.

Usually for me, the view during the 20 minute descent into town is joyful but somehow I was just a little sad to see them this time. I had such a good time in Kansas City, I was sad to leave. I think I would love to live there.

As you may recall, I was in Kansas City to photograph products for a friend of mine. Heidi is incredibly talented and makes all sorts of beautiful things to spoil puppies and kitties. The photo above is her and her little friend Beetle Juice.

The four days I spent with her and her zoo were absolutely wonderful. Her family is so sweet! Her home is incredibly warm and elegant in a lovely neighborhood with mature trees- a beautiful place to go for a visit. We shot 8 sets both location ad work and studio images and ran around Kansas City enjoying the nice weather and incredible sights.

From the moment I arrived, it was a blast. We visited Dottie Mae's - an old costume shop to find some cool stuff for our shoots. While we did not find too much, that place is really neat... Just watch out for the owner...she's a bit of a grouchy character.

Dottie Mae's happens to be across the street from one of two tattoo shops owned by Heidi's husband, Blake. We stopped in for a quick visit to say hello to Heidi's sister who is a piercer there and to see what Blake was working on. If you are in KC and are not terrified of needles, the man is an incredible artist. Seriously. Incredible. If you are a big chicken like me, he designs a lot of the art work on Heidi's awesome tattoo inspired products and even hand paints collar buckles with tattoo inspired themes or amazingly detailed portraits. He did the art work for "Puppy Love" for pet flys as well. At least your dogs will look awesome.

The Plaza had tons of beautiful places to shoot and while most of the fountains were still off for the cold season its a charming area packed with store fronts and art work. Heidi's niece, Cassidy, is about the best little model ever. She was a good sport and posed with Gary (a sassy little xolo) for us.

We spent the evening working with the studio set and Heidi's cute little clan. Heidi has two sphynx kitties as well as a pug, two Chihuahua's, and a xolo that occupy her home and her heart. They were incredible little models for us and did great!

The next day we all piled in Blake's 1961 Lincoln Continental and hit the park for some vintage inspired images. I tell you, that car is something else. Its quite drool worthy to say the very least. I think Blake likes it too.

We brought along Beetle Juice and Clyde (chihuahuas) in their finery for some great shots.

That evening, Heidi's friend Lee came over with her adorable pups. Saryn is a gorgeous little Chinese crested with a personality to match her sweet face and Hans is an intermediate xolo who I am pretty sure might be a human in a hairless dog suit. They did great! Saryn and Cassidy did a sweet but simple Alice in Wonderland inspired set and Hans and Gary had to pose together to show the difference in size.

It had stormed pretty bad that night but the next morning I got up early to photograph Blake and Heidi's huge koi fish in their backyard koi pond. Two of them are roughly the size of beluga whales.

It was a little chilly out, but Heidi and I headed out to photograph some of her new sweatshirt designs with Gary on the plaza and on the side wall of Blake's Westport shop just a few blocks away.

That evening I sat and edited while visiting with Heidi and Cassidy. Heidi and Blake worked on some REALLY cool new sweatshirt designs- I can't wait for her to put them up- they are AMAZING! As a team, the two of them are especially genius. Blake comes up with incredible designs, Heidi digitizes them and colors them up and just a couple hours later they are ready to wear! The detail and work that goes into them is incredible. We were up long into the night planning out what else we needed to get done, playing with Cassidy and enjoying the evening.

The next day I got up early and to business. So did Clyde, one of Heidi's Chihuahua's. I just have to say now he is the tiniest, cutest, sweetest little snot ever. Hes super cute. I photographed a bunch of Heidi's products on their own as well, and we also photographed her wildly popular Denz. For what its worth, my hounds love them as does every other hound I have ever met with them. They rock- and are so cute!

Ok, ok, I might have just tortured the pug a little bit too. Its ok, she likes it. Just ask her if she wants a greenie, or meanie, or a martini.

I will be back next month with one of our Italian Greyhounds (Mirabella) for their pet expo fashion show (and more great photography). I had a great time and I can't wait to see Heidi, Blake and Cassidy again (and the puppies and kitties too!).

At the end of the day, I was sad to go but there were puppies and a Kirk and work waiting at home for me. I will just have to enjoy the beautiful warm glow of Phoenix for now and be thankful for the great friends I have both here and a short flight away. This week is going to be one of those weeks where I barely sleep for sheer excitement. At the end of the week I will be hopping a plane (yay! I LOVE flying!) to The City of Fountains! Alright, its the mid west...or well...just the mid..but I am still excited!

Why am I so excited you may ask? I am visiting Kansas City to spend some time with my good friend Heidi of K9Closet to have some fun and do some product shots for her! She hired RedFeather Photography to help make sure her collars and awesome canine couture collections are presented as beautifully photographically as they are in person!

While I am not usually too keen on commercial product shots this is a little different. Heidi outfits my hounds (they are very fashionable little boogers) and we love her work! Not only that but shes about the sweetest person you will ever have the pleasure of talking to! We will be shooting full on campaigns with her own beautiful little models! Heidi has two gorgeous sphynx kitties, a sweet pug, two way to cute chihuahuas and a very special xolo dog. She has some great new products to launch so I am so excited to see how they are received!

I will be flying back out in April with Miss Mirabella, our 7lb Italian Greyhound to participate in the K9closet Fashion Show at the Kansas City Pet Expo (which I will be photographing)!

This is a recent shot of Mirabella done to promote Heidi's very popular (and incredibly classy) Jolie collection. They are GORGEOUS!!!

I am a little nervous about the weather for this first trip (its 90 degrees outside today here, and its hard to find warmer clothes in the Phoenix Area) and packing (always worried about forgetting stuff- doubly so when I have to pack a whole studio and take it with me!) but I am so excited to visit some place new!

I will be out of the office from Thursday night through Tuesday for this first trip. I might be a little slow to answer you via email and will have limited availability via telephone while I am out of town. Sorry about that. It will be worth it for cute puppy and kitten photos though!

I Am In Geeky Love......

Every now and then, I blog about something completely unrelated to photography. This is one of those posts.

Swarovski just came out with their "Active Crystal Collection" and I have fallen in love.

Many of you who know me well, know my mother gifted me with a piece of jewelery from Swarovski over the holidays that I had been eyeing for a couple of years- and I wear it 4-7 days a week. Its a little red heart encrusted in red crystals on a simple cord. Classic! It looks like this:

Well this new piece makes my geeky little heart go pitter patter thud thud in the same way with a geeky twist.

Yep. Its a geeky little modern day locket of sorts. I could fill it with my favorite images and carry it with me always (Just probably not the 1000 they advertise for- at least not with what I shoot with...). Or some music that inspires me. Or some cryptic binary message. Or whatever. When put together its so classic and unassuming....then it transforms into a USB drive with endless delicious nerdy possibilities.

The cost of this little nerdy trinket ($180...ouchie) is more than I can justify in this economy for something shiny (and boy is it shiny!!!) but I love it all the same.

If you share my love for all things shiny and geeky and just can't resist, I will load your favorite engagement/wedding/baby photos on it for you and I won't tell anyone- it will be our geeky little secret!

Emily + John - Wedding Previews

Emily and John were sealed in the Mesa Temple on Saturday. It was an incredible day- unseasonably warm and the grounds were the most beautiful I have seen them in years. The color and all of the flowers were amazing!

These two are just incredibly beautiful together. I had a blast working with them at the Temple and then joining them for their reception up at Desert Highlands Country Club.

This was one of those weddings I just could not stop editing on...so grab a comfy chair and a snack, this is a big preview.

Their family is FULL of shutterbugs- and I can see why- aren't they great subjects?

They just kinda naturally did this while walking...it was so sweet. John lifted her train to carry behind her and she naturally just wrapped her arm around his waist. They just fit together.

Look out GQ! These guys....oh man! Er...men!

Her flowers were so incredibly beautiful. That said, the ring steals the show.

This is the shoe shot you are going to get for this one. Its accurate. Poor Emily- those shoes killed her poor feet and so they spent a lot of time in the grass. As much as I LOVE wedding shoes, I 100% whole heartedly agree with barefoot brides.

Emily told me she chose her dress because it made her think of something her grandmother might have worn. It was so classy and elegant and intricately detailed. Beautiful!

You can just tell by the way they look at each other...he is totally her prince charming. Incredibly sweet.

Prince charming accidentally got the train of Emily's dress slightly damp. No harm, no foul but it was worth a giggle. She was a good sport and laughed it off.

I think they would have stayed like this if I had let them. Gotta get down and into the cool grass in wedding wear- when else will you ever get the chance?

I love the sun peeking in behind John's shoulder in this image. We didn't have too much light left but what we had was gorgeous.

Their reception was lovely. The cake was gorgeous too! It was a beautiful evening and it was nice to see them with all of their family and friends. A perfect end to a perfect day.

Come Celebrate Spring with RedFeather Photography!

The weather is incredible. The birds are singing, the flowers are blooming and the butterflies are fluttering. It's spring in good old AZ- time to celebrate!

Spend a day with us at the Desert Botanical Garden on March 14th at 9am. Come stroll with us as we enjoy the beautiful glass artwork of Dale Chihuly, the live butterflies in the Butterfly Pavilion, and the incredible wildflowers taking the garden by storm!

If you have not been to the garden in a while, this is an INCREDIBLE opportunity. They have just added a new entrance garden, two new major exhibit renovations were completed a short time ago, and they currently house the world renowned "Chihuly: The Nature of Glass" exhibition. Time flies when you're...um...working?

I was casually reminded by a blog that links to mine that I have not posted in three weeks. Wow, thats quite a long time. Oops.

I promise I am not dead, nor have I run away to Paris, or anything exciting like that.

I am just busy. Working.

On what might you ask? The best answer to that is "stuff".

Coming up, we have a new super exciting website (heck yeah! Just have to decide if I want to add music to it/ figure out how to license some cool music...and finish the galleries) which has been a bit of work, a couple different destination shoots I am working on the planning kinks for, lots and lots of editing and more. Weddings and sessions on the weekends, family junk, and puppy snuggles. Exciting stuff.

Since I really have very little useful to say today, I will leave you with a video from Kate Micucci, who you may have seen on Scrubs lately (<3) or maybe in the new movie "Bart Got a Room" which should be out someplace near you soon...(further proof that naming your kid Kate will mean they will grow up to be awesome). Shes multi-talented and fabulous. I get hours of laughter and happy from her music. Its awesome. Her art work is pretty awesome too.

Adorable and hilarious right? Told ya. If you are in LA you can apparently go see her sing songs and tell stories on the last Monday of each month. If you have the opportunity- go!

Melissa + David - Wedding Previews

What can I say...

It was a wedding and a beautiful day.

They had beautiful rings.

She was a beautiful bride.

She had a beautiful dress (and shoes, and hair and makeup).

He was a dashing groom.

They hired a videographer who does beautiful work (and in time for the reception too!).

They were so beautifully happy exiting the temple, sealed for time and all eternity.

She chose beautiful flowers (even the kids took notice!).

And a beautiful cake.

They have a beautiful (and very sweet) friends and family who were just so happy to see them get sealed in the temple.

It was a beautiful and intimate reception in a beautiful garden.

They are a beautiful couple.

At the end of the day, it was a beautiful love story- one I hope to hear many more chapters of in the years to come.

Thank you for letting me capture your day. It was an honor.

Jason + Bryn - Engagement Previews

Alright. I have been holding out on you. These are from a couple of weeks ago, but I have been so busy working that I have not had time to put them up until now.

This is Jason and Bryn. They are superheroes*

Ok, not really super heroes, but close. They are good friends of ours, and lets face it, your friends are the closest thing to super heroes you are ever gonna get! We have known them since high school. It's Jason's fault Kirk and I are together (we blame him entirely). He was co-best man at our wedding. We love him. More importantly, Bryn, who we have also known and loved since the blissful days of our youth loves him (and we think she is pretty spiffy too).

These two are amazing. Both incredibly sweet, wonderful friends (and they mould young minds...which immeadiately makes them awesome). They way they glow together is incredible. They make each other so very happy- which makes us happy too!

We went and played at the botanical garden. So much pretty color and light!

Isn't Bryn pretty? Jason better marry her quick before someone steals her away!

I love the way they make each other laugh. Its such an incredibly beautiful thing.

I played with a irresponsible amount of texture/ blur with these guys- and lots of color. I don't know why, it just felt right! Usually I use texture very sparingly, but this was a no holds barred kinda session.

We were incredibly honored to be asked to photograph them. I admit when Jason told me how he proposed I was so happy I could have burst. I am just so very excited for them!

Paul + Carrie- Wedding Preview

Let me first say that 2008 was an INCREDIBLE year for us here at RedFeather Photography. Thank you everyone for your love and support! We had a great time working with so many awesome people this year- I can not believe just how blessed we are! Every single person who we work with, who views our images, who reads the blog or just thinks good thoughts for us has made this year one of the best ever!

That being said, I couldn't let 2008 end without just one last wedding.

Carrie and Paul. Wow. These two are fun, vibrant, oh-so-silly, and crazy in love. I know I have said it before, but I love love. Seriously. Love.

Carrie and Paul were sealed in the Mesa Temple on the 30th...a very busy Tuesday. The day before we went out in the afternoon to do some fun portraits with them and get some of the photos done in the beautiful afternoon light.

Their images speak for themselves. These two are incredible. Carrie looked beautiful, and Paul cleaned up nicely too. We got some really incredible images- these two were so fun to work with (and their families are sweeter than sugar too!).

I got a new toy from Kirk for Christmas I just had to play with. I have to say, I like it. I can now add pretty stars and other shapes to some shots, and some really cool, crazy, unpredictable selective focus. This image was created with a lensbaby lens, and a creative aperture kit which when given to me for Christmas garnered another "Merry Christmas, now what is it exactly?" from my wonderful mother in law (my favorite kind of gifts are the ones I have to explain...hehe).

Paul and Carrie are the authority in silly faces. Seriously, they have lots of them and they are all awesome and hilarious. See?

Of course, there are many wonderful men in Carrie's life (lucky girl!). Her brothers are a riot!

The little girls in the family were the very definition of adorable. Just their shoes alone will make you melt. See?

It was amazingly wonderful to work with such a great bunch of people there to support such a wonderful couple. Truly beautiful.

Baby Calla!

You may recall April and Duane's maternity session back in October. Their little one is finally here! Shes an absolute angel, and so incredibly beautiful that you would swear the angel wings are real.

I got a chance to meet her last night. I am so very happy for April and Duane and their family! What a sweet little lady!

As a photographer, I am so grateful to have friends like April and Duane who let me play and be creative. It absolutely makes my day. I was up until 2am editing because I just. could. not. stop.

Can ya blame me? Yeah, I thought not.

We used the same butterflies and flowers from the maternity session!

Calla has so much hair! So pretty!

This hat was so big on her! Adorable.

Look what a little sweetheart she is! She was so good. She didn't get upset even once, even with all of our harassing and photo taking.

And of course, my absolute favorite. I had these wings custom made a while ago, but it seems no one wants photos of baby boys in fairy wings...but they are beautiful on Calla!

Color and Light

I am insanely happy for no particular reason at all, which is a beautiful way to feel.

I could see my breath as I hauled my gear into the car. I giggled as I shivered because I kinda like chilly mornings.

I spent a morning with friends in the garden and clickity flashed my way through the first part of my day. There was an afternoon nap (needed it I swear!), there was watching my Kirk help hang my mom's Christmas lights.

There was editing. There were new actions. There was joy. There was a day overflowing with happiness. There was a Costco trip and a kid movie.

There was color and light.

I hope your day was happy too. While we are on the subject of happy- go check out the color and light at the botanical gardens right now. It will make you happy too.

Yup, we do now. Chances are if you worked with us recently, you have been added to it. If for some screwy reason you are not on our list, and you would like to be, you can get on it by filling out the form here (coincidentally, it also puts you on Santa's "nice" list!).

We don't send stuff very often (once a month or less), but it lets you stay in the know about some cool friends and family only freebies and dealies, the latest and super greatest, and other occasional nifties.

Its all very exciting.

Family Can Weather Any Storm

Or at least ward it off. When Susan asked me to do a quick family session on Sunday, since they would be in town...I was really excited! That excitement turned to worry when the weatherman ominously forecasted rain, chilly temperatures and quite possibly the end of my eternal summer I had been enjoying.

Bummer.

Other family complications stepped in and we wondered if the whole family would make it. Would it even matter if it rained?

Sunday arrived and chilly it was, but the rain had run for the hills by mid morning. Good. Heck, I could even see a couple of shadows by the time afternoon rolled around. Excellent!

We arrived at our location, and everyone made it! Even better? They had a fire going in the fire pits! Kirk was feeling pretty sorry he wore shorts ("Oh its not too bad honey" my butt!) and was quite relieved to find this happy fortune I think.

I photographed the coolest family in Coolidge. Seriously, can't you just see the awesome?

This. All the time. Awesome.

Don't play with fire ok kids? You will either get hurt, or get yelled at by an old man, or both.

I felt like Christmas music for this one...just not normal Christmas music. It fit. It made me smile.

Melissa + David - Engagement Portraits

Over the weekend, we had the pleasure of spending some time with Melissa and David and taking some engagement portraits. What an incredibly fun couple! Doubly cool, because Melissa just happens to be Matt's sister. We are so excited to be working with this awesome family again.

Despite some unexpected location complications, it was a great shoot. These two were up for just about anything!

They both have these fantastic blue eyes. Seriously, amazing!

We can't wait for their wedding next month! Its coming up fast!

Matt + Linsey - Wedding Preview

This one has been a long time coming. Between clerical stuff and a way sicky me, its a smidge late.

I can't say enough good stuff about these two...I just had such a great time working with them! Their love for one another is completely worn on their sleeves, and their laughter is absolutely infectious (as if I needed another infection right now...). Seriously, fantastic, meant-for-each-other, head-over-heels couple.

They aren't bad looking either.

While mid day light is not my favorite, these two were beautiful in it.

Gotta love a couple that sneaks in kisses during formals!

Now, while traditionally I don't include many reception images in previews, I feel very compelled to tell you about how beautiful theirs was. Aside from being decorated in a completely awesome western theme that was just sooo them (they are both horse lovers), it was just so intensely personal. With as many weddings as I have had the pleasure of working on, I am not easily moved to tears....but this was different.

I found myself shooting through tears as Linsey danced with her father, and as she serenaded Matt with a very special song in Portuguese (which I could not for the life of me find to license for their slide show, try though I might...) I just could not help myself. Needless to say, it was as incredible as they are.

Matt and Linsey, thank you both so much for letting me capture your beautiful, wonderful, inspiring day!

Sick Photographer

Being sick is the least fun thing ever. Being sick off and on for three weeks however, just plain sucks.

Thats right...three weeks.

Two bouts of that nasty two day flu thingy which my mom and Kirk seem to insist has got to be something more than flu because they were a week apart and then a whole week long nasty respiratory thing knocks me just a smidge behind (hard to edit while you are hacking your brains out/seeing through the medicated goggles).

I have been careful not to share my germs, and before anyone with the motherly instincts asks, yes, I have been getting lots of sleep, drinking fluids and taking medicine.

Ain't it grand?

At this point I have been sick enough in the past 30 days to hopefully get a break for then next six months and not get sick again. Right? Right.

On the upside it appears I am on the mend, so there should be lots of exciting stuff here this weekend. I hope. There are oodles of discs leaving the office this weekend too. Hooray!

I apologize for any delays this bit of whining and hacking has caused. We now return to our regularly scheduled programming.

Let's talk about your Digital Negatives!

Lots and lots of questions lately, so I thought I would take this opportune moment to have a heart to heart with everyone and no one in particular about our Digital Negative files. This is important information. Please take a moment to read this and please contact us with any questions or concerns. We are happy to help!

Many photographers these days do not offer digital files in order to protect their copyright and their business. We believe you should have your photos for a little personal use. They are after all your photos! So, with any shoot you do with us, family portraits, wedding, whatever...you get a disc of fully edited images! Keep in mind we DO retain all copyrights on the images.

Whats on the disc?

Generally there are a few things:

A folder of high resolution files

A folder of lower resolution smaller web sized files with a little border at the bottom (not always but usually. If for some reason your disc does not have this feature (its a recent addition) just let me know and we will get you a set if you like to share online)

A release notification with information about what you can (and can't) do with these files.

So what can you do?

Well, quite a few things. The files are yours for personal use. You can print them if you wish (though we can ALWAYS supply you with archival professional prints, far superior to most consumer labs) at any time.

You can share them online on facebook, your blog, email to grandma, whatever...we just ask that you use the websized ones for copyright protection for all involved and give proper photo credit. You will notice, we use the exact same files for posting online too! Please let us know if you need any help sharing online...we are happy to assist!

You can scrapbook with them, digitally or traditionally. Have holiday cards made. Make a slideshow for personal use (again we can help with a professional one if you like). Use images as your desktop background at home or work. Send prints to grandma. Make wedding favors. Send them out with invitations. You catch the drift.

So whats off limits?

Copying the disc for family and friends and whoever. We all like to share but this is a matter of quality control, and copyright management. Additional copies are available from us, but in order to keep the quality and track who has the rights to use them for personal use, we reserve the right to make and distribute discs.

Derivative works. Because it reflects on our work, you may not alter or re-edit the images without written consent. Our work is not done once the shutter has been released. There is so much more that we do to produce the final product! We work hard to make sure you get all versions of each image. If there is something else you want in an edit, just ask! Derivative works like portrait to painting etc are only allowed with written permission. We will work with you, but its not included in the current release in order to protect copyrights and quality of our work. You can not use them in commercial derivitve works either.

Commercial use. Since while you have release to use them personally but do not own the copy rights to the images, you can not sell the images commercially. Hopefully this one makes sense.

We want you to enjoy your images! Please if you have any questions at ALL about what is allowed or not allowed by the release or need help with great ways to share and use your images, contact us!

And because we know no boring (but important) informational post would be complete without a pretty picture, Mr. Butterfly thanks you for your attention to this important message.

Tenney Family Mini Sessions

Its been a zany week of things breaking, not going to plan or just being plain screwy here at RedFeather Photography. But I would be absolutely crazy not to find a few moments to share these....

Some of you may remember Chris and Layla Tenney. If not, this is them:

We photographed their wedding and Payson reception nearly a year ago. It was fantastic (and chilly). Layla recently contacted me to complete some family portraits for her extended family on Chris's side, since the family would have a little time all together to get them done. We set up mini sessions for each group and the whole big group together at Freestone Park in Gilbert. It was a zany day to be there...there was a workshop going on so there were about 35 photographers (and families/couples) all trying to use one tiny area of the park. Compromise and patience were definately the words of the day.

This may just be my favorite shot from the whole day...so cute!

An Autumn Ramble

For those of you who just come here for the shiny photos...let me get that one outta the way so you can move on with your busy day...

I love autumn. Crisp, cool air and that someone-is-burning-the-dust-outta-a-chimney-somewhere smell. Somewhere in this state there is some pretty yellow growing into the trees. Daily packages arrive from my vendors- holiday orders from clients...or even little parcels containing holiday shopping for my own family. The bits and pieces of family spread all over the country, are drawn back together via magnetic force, airplanes and magic. The whispers of Christmas music are starting to play in the stores and soon Christmas cards will start to appear in the mailbox. Daily trips to the post office to mail some sort of goody to somebody. Weddings on the weekends.

The dogs plead with me not to make them go outside in the morning and come back in with cold ears. We all snuggle with Kirk that extra five minutes after the alarm goes off, begging not to have to put bare feet on chilly tile. I don't have to feel guilty making my favorite tea or hot chocolate. Warm blankets and deep sleep. I can notice each day the shades of the evening light getting a little bit cooler. Time zones flop back wards in places where they are crazy enough to want to save daylight, so I can call my out of town friends to chat just a little bit later.

I can break out my favorite fuzzy sweater, and on really cold days a funky scarf. I go Christmas shopping and lunching with my mom. I take family portraits of dozens of happy families, dressed the same but different, eyes sparkling. They will send my photos to their loved ones this year.

Apple cider and fall break. The kids next door play touch football in the park across the street. We go for late night walks just to breathe in the cold air. Maybe if I am lucky this year, we will see snow in the Superstitions again. Then I can go photograph snow covered cactus for Glenn and his friend who loves saguaros.

I love this last bit of every year. Maybe I am savoring being young and happy, maybe its just the change in the weather, or the hope and joy that the conclusion of one year and the beginning of another bring.

Either way...I love autumn and wish it would never ever end.

Photographers- A little something shiny!

Aren't ya jealous? Don't you want one in your stocking from Santa this year? Isn't it purty? I figured it would be great to wear to shoots and shows and PPA and whenever...maybe it will even spark conversations about photography!

Plus, I will look smashing, and adorable, and all that fun stuff! Mine happens to be a T for Terrific (or something...mebbe I should have requested a K for Kool and Kate...).

If you want one too (and you know you do, because all the cool kids are wearing them) go get one! They are inexpensive, handmade with love (I bet you could even ask for extra love) and shiny!

Mini Session: The Cutest Four Pack on Earth!

On Sunday, in addition to our morning in the groves with Kirk's family, Jennifer invited her good friend Barbara for a little mini session in the groves, since we were already there...and we are so glad she did!

This is Barbara. Isn't she pretty?

Barbara has four...thats right FOUR adorable kiddos...who happen to share the same birthday. They are gorgeous and sweet and I can not even believe what a cute little family they are! Seriously, these kids are just beautiful!

The kids were angels. While mini sessions are perfect for younger ones, these guys were great! Gotta love sisters who love each other!

And the boys were just too cool!!! Get a load of these handsome gents!

Are they not an incredibly beautiful family? I just love them to pieces!

Since it was a mini session, just a few previews, and no slide show. That's all ya get for now! Can't give it all away can I? But trust me, these guys are as sweet as their Halloween candy!

Generations in the Groves

I am not exactly sure where I want to go with this post. Its hard to say. There are just some sessions you dream about and day dream about afterwards and it gets you lost for words. You will have to bear with me...

I can still close my eyes and can see warm morning light, the kids joyfully running through the trees giggling and playing. A family, three generations of family, just joyful to be together on a beautiful Sunday morning. Its peaceful and timeless.

The truth is this family is one great tree in the grove of Kempton. The big family I had always wanted and finally got when I married Kirk. One thing is for sure, it sure is a change of pace from my little less-than-ten-people-extended-family I had come from.

I am still learning names. Still learning stories. After all, Kirk has ten aunts and uncles, each with children of their own many of whom have their own children. Its a grove of a family, each part its own great tree that branches out and intertwines. Those I know very well I love very much. Those I don't know very well yet, I still love very much.

I may never learn every name, every story. There are new little branches every year. All I know is I am lucky to be among them in the grove.

I admit, I was thrilled when Jennifer got in touch with me. Over a couple days the whole family joined in and pieced together times and a fantastic (new...to me anyway) location. It came together beautifully. The kids were fantastic...and the grown ups were pretty good too. There is an incredible amount of love in this family.

I will be editing these images over the next couple weeks. There were dozens of great ones...buckets of them even. I can not wait to share the final images- I am so excited I feel like my heart just may burst. In the mean time, a handful of previews, skimmed from my favorites will have to do.

So here are some photos for Chuck and Charlene, and their kids Jennifer, Megan, Rhonda, Austin and even that guy whose name rhymes with Dirt (and anyone else who just loves beautiful autumn morning photos of beautiful families). As always you can click them to see them a little bigger.

This was not the most perfect photo of the grand kids and Chuck and Charlene, but I just can't get over Charlene's laugh. Its so beautiful.

Carrie + Paul Engagement Portraits

This is Carrie.

Carrie loves Paul. This is Paul. Paul loves Carrie too.

They are two of a kind. That much is clear the moment you meet them. On Friday, Kirk and I got to spend a little time getting to know Carrie and Paul while taking their engagement portraits. We learned a lot!

We learned that they are in love....

And have a great aptitude for making awesome silly faces. Seriously! Awesome.

We learned that Carrie has fabulous taste in shoes! I mean, who wouldn't love these...

We learned that they are brave enough to sit in wet grass...

and jump from highish places, so long as they are holding hands....

We learned that Paul has nice taste in rings (nice work buddy- its perfect on her!)....

Paul learned the superman hold, guy lean and how to properly dip a beautiful woman...

We learned that Carrie and Paul are VERY sweet on each other...Awwwww....

We even learned that they are not too afraid to get their pant legs a little damp for the sake of some fun fountain photos! (ok, we rolled up the pant legs, but only a little!).

We had a really fun time working with Carrie and Paul and we can't wait for their wedding at the end of this year!

Their slide show, like a lot of the ones we put up is awesome. You would learn a whole lot more if you watched it too!

Linsey + Matt - Engagement Portraits

Earlier this week, we spent some time with Linsey and Matt taking some beautiful engagement portraits.

These guys are getting married in a little less than a month and we are so excited for them!

It was an incredibly fun session-Linsey and Matt laughed for quite a lot of it. They brought a friend who is also a videographer to capture the session too!

These two are so incredibly sweet together! I know I say it time and time again, but really- I love love!

Linsey is incredibly beautiful and in the evening light her hair almost glows! Matt is one lucky guy- and I think he might know it too!

I absolutely adore sunset sessions. So much delicious warm light!

Her ring is sooo beautiful! Matt did a good job.

There are some images I love enough to share multiple versions of in previews. They are just too sweet not to!

This one I loved because as Linsey was telling us the story of "The Happy Meal Smile" she was just lit up with laughter. A mild cross process and some texture gives this image so much pop, I can almost hear her laughing again!

This one I did multiple versions of too. Everyone who has ever worked with us knows that if we edit an image, you get copies of each version. A lot of that is because we recognize that personal taste is a factor...the rest of this is that I love them all and think you might too! Gorgeous, are they not? You can just feel the romance!

Mariposa Monarcha

For the fifth (I think...) year in a row, the Desert Botanical Garden has their Monarch migration exhibit- "Mariposa Monarcha".

We took a little time to stop in yesterday and visit their beautiful aviary teeming with hundred of these beauties.

God what I wouldn't give to have wings like that some days.

If you get time to stop in between now and Nov. 2nd, its worth the visit and an incredibly awe inspiring exhibit. This time of year the garden also offers live concerts, fine dining, luminarias, and a free pumpkin patch for the kids. Very very soon they will have an incredible glass art exhibit throughout the garden...staring Nov 22 (until then parts of the garden are off limits due to construction- but it will all be worth it!).

The weather is getting nicer (sort of...) get out and see something amazing.

If you don't have plans on the 25th, and you like really amazing, truly beautiful music for good causes...you should go check out the Mindy Geldhill concert. (click for bigger!)

The concert is selflessly in benefit for the Neilson's, a local family from Mesa who had their lives changed back in August by a tragic plane crash. Pilot Doug Kinneard did not survive. The Neilson's survived, but their medical treatment has and will be long, arduous and expensive. They have a very long road ahead of them. Meanwhile, their incredible family updates the world regularly through blog posts and keeps Stephanie Nielsons inspiring blog about the joys of family life and love alive through reposts of favorites requested by thousands of readers.

The whole thing thus far has been an amazing demonstration of the good left in the world. In times of hurt, fear and uncertainty, hundreds have worked together to help, thousands have sent well wishes, good thoughts and prayers to the family- many of them knowing Stephanie Nielson and her family only through her heartwarming and openly honest and sincere blog.

In addition to being entirely for a very very worthy cause, Mindy's music is incredible. Seriously. Check her out. After listening to just a couple songs, I really could just listen to them over and over.

A Colorful Diversion....

Over my years working with images, I have developed an intimate relationship with color. My world revolves around hues. I dream about them at night. I throw fits when my monitor is not perfectly calibrated. Its an obsession.

We all have a relationship with color, as part of the world around us. But how often do we test that relationship?

Well, now is as good as ever. I dare you to test your color IQ. Its easy (or is it?). Just arrange the colors in order in each row!

This was sent to me by a friend, and I decided to try it. I took about five minutes of rearranging and I scored a 0, which sort of surprised me. How did you do?

April + Duane- Maternity Portraits

Many of you will remember April and Duane- or at least their engagement and wedding photos. If you need a refresher, they are the couple on the home page at www.aztempleweddings.com.

Fast forward to today, a little more than a year after their wedding. They are still as in love as the day we met them- and their family is growing!

It was such a fun session! April looked absolutely gorgeous! She has the most perfect baby belly ever! Duane was so sweet too- he did all the putting together of letters, tying of bows and a belly kiss that could make a popsicle's heart melt. Seriously- a photographer's dream.

This is going to be one beautiful baby I tell ya- just wait and see. I am so happy for April and Duane- how exciting!

Post work has been really a blast for this session. It felt like a sepia shoot to me, so I think I will share plenty of those. This is just a little sneak peek- there were soooo many good ones.

On to the photos and slide show darned it!

Redesigns and Reminders!

First things first. My amazing husband was kind enough to redo the look and feel of www.aztempleweddings.com last night while I sat on the couch with the puppies and watched the season premiere of the office. That's how much he loves me. He loves you too apparently- because clearly he does not believe you should have to look at an ugly website. Hooray!

Second...we have integrated the blog! Thats right, one blog to rule them all!!! Muahahahaha!!! Ok, its not that exciting, but I had you convinced for a moment there didn't I? Truthfully, I am just too scatterbrained to remember to update multiple blogs, which is just no fun for anyone is it? Problem solved.

It should be noted however, that if you got here from the www.aztempleweddings.com, the links on the top of this page all go to red-featherphoto.com. Sorry. I have yet to find a good solution for that, but I fear there may not be one. On the plus side, they are both pretty and have shiny beautiful images and the same look and feel- so don't be sad- explore both!

October is family portrait month and its looking like its going to be a good one! We have some spots left, so get in touch with us to reserve yours! Remember, $25 from each session goes to Operation Smile through PPA charities! We are so excited about this charity that we are also sending a portion of the proceeds from product sales too- so no better time to get your holiday cards done, and give a deserving kid a beautiful smile! Falling in Love with Water Lilies

As many of you may or may not know, I recently returned from a four day trip back to the home of my almost-still-sweeeeedish ancestors. Minnesota. The objective was to visit family, see my elderly grandma for possibly the last time and allow my mom to wax nostalgic for at least 72 consecutive hours all while toting along my husband, sister and I.

It was actually very enjoyable. We share many childhood favorites, and it was fun to show Kirk someplace green and cool and beautiful with just a hint of autumn. I jam packed the trip with activities, since it was to be a short one.

Somewhere in that whirlwind, we saw them...water lilies.

Now to be truthful, I have been begging the photography gods for a chance to get some good water lily shots for a while now. I love the beautiful shapes and colors all layered on black glassy water. Sadly, this type of plant does not thrive in Arizona like they do elsewhere. Sure they will grow and bloom once in a while, but nothing quite like this.

There were dozens and dozens of them, in every imaginable size, shape and color. Pure heaven. Add to that a fresh sprinkling of cool rain and diffused light and I was in my own fantasy world.

I watched the rain build up on petals and pads, weighing them down. A few of the flowers had filled with water and sunk like tiny colorful boats. Most were gracefully covered in crystal like beads of water, delicately balanced on colorful petals.

Giant amazonian lilies held a thorny underwater surprise for fishes that might prey on them. I was informed that they bloom only two nights. The first night, the flowers are white, and on the second, a brilliant pink!

I'm in love with these flowers that dance on still water. Pale and hot pinks, reds, whites, purples...so many colors heavily saturated with the grey day.

I think I will have to visit again, if only to see the water lilies.

Wishlist: Drop It Modern

If it was not obvious, I have a clear taste for damask. Apparently, the folks at photographer run Drop it Modern get me. And I love that.

Most of you who work with me know I love to get out and about to shoot- go someplace new, fun, different - and play! But for those rainy days, or gotta do it in the studio shoots....these are the bees knees!!!!!

Busy busy busy and lots of good things coming!

Each October, a large portion of our portrait sales goes directly to Operation Smile. We love it- its so good to see these kids get the surgery they need to have normal happy lives and big smiles! Our Hosting Company is KILLING Me Here!

As you may have noticed by the distinct lack of images at the moment, our hosting company has messed up (again) and our domain is down.

This means no photos on the blog, no website, no email (!!!!!!!) etc. Please bear with me until we get them to fix this mess.

Sorry. Sometimes these things happen...I know, Kirk works for a hosting company. However, it still sucks when they do.

Edited to Add: We're back now! Hooray! Let's hope it does not break again....

What a Little Angel!

I am starting to get used to doing newborn portraits. I actually am finding I really enjoy it.

This little guy was kind enough to model for me on Saturday! Maybe I am just really lucky, but he was a complete and total little angel for the whole session. He was so good.

And because I LOVE this one in both black and white and color, here it is again...

In addition to being good, he is just plain beautiful. Just look at those baby blues! He has the most amazing blue eyes and was such an expressive little guy. What a total sweetheart!
